This is Our Africa is a captivating documentary exploring the rich history of the Clarens and Golden Gate region in the Free State, South Africa. From remarkable palaeontological discoveries to the events of the Anglo Boer War, the film uncovers the stories, landscapes and historical moments that shaped this iconic part of the country.

Combining historical analysis, expert commentary and sweeping natural visuals, the documentary reveals the geological and cultural heritage of the region. The story also touches on important palaeontological discoveries in the area, including the site where dinosaur eggs were uncovered, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the prehistoric history hidden within the Golden Gate landscape.

CoolerBox Brothers handled the full production of the documentary, including cinematography, filming, editing, colour grading, sound design, motion graphics and post production. The team spent two months filming in and around the Golden Gate and Clarens region, capturing interviews, landscapes and historical locations to bring the story to life.

During production the crew was also taken to a remote and little known location not accessible to the public. To protect the secrecy of the site, the team was blindfolded and transported for nearly two hours through farm gates and along gravel roads before arriving at the destination. When the blindfolds were removed, they found themselves in a secluded valley known locally as “Little Serengeti”, where large numbers of wildlife roam freely across the open plains. Capturing this hidden environment added a unique visual dimension to the documentary and showcased a remarkable side of the region rarely seen by outsiders.

Through careful storytelling and polished production, the documentary balances educational insight with cinematic appeal, creating an immersive exploration of South Africa’s heritage and the extraordinary landscapes of the Free State.
